Service Learning Project
The service day on April 5th, really gave me a precious opportunity to have access to the life and health of immigrant persons from South America and their priorities in life as well as their consideration about health. This is my first time to help so many immigrant persons from South America check their blood pressure, height and body weight, and give them information about how to have access to free clinical and blood pressure control as well as weight management. I really thank Professor Raja, because it was she who gave us this precious experience to do service for and know this special population in USA. Even though health status is quite important for plenty of people in USA, it unfortunately became the less significant for most of the immigrants from South America who came to our University on Saturday. Although I tried my best to tell them that our service was free and would give you some information about your blood pressure or body mass index (BMI) as well as the information for free clinical, many people refused to have free blood pressure, body weight and height measurements on Saturday afternoon because they might feel shy or they just don’t concern about their blood pressure and BMI or they might feel that assessments would delay them having access to other free services. Some of them who were persuaded to accept service only concerned about whether our service was free and the information of free clinical. It seemed that many of them were not aware of what their high blood pressure and BMI mean to them and didn’t ask me about the information in the brochure about hypertension, diabetes and obesity. Also it is difficult for me to communicate with them because some of them could not comprehend what I was telling them to do such as standing on the board of scale, turning around facing outside for height check.
